86 Logic is a quarterly magazine that publishes poetry, prose, interviews, and visual art from people who have worked in the hospitality industry. Each issue, we include a column called "Around the Table." Modeled after the New Yorker's "Goings on About Town," ATT features "news, gossip, & discoveries," including short-form reviews on books, movies, podcasts, and more--all with some relationship to restaurants & the service industry.
Thus far, we've included mentions of: The Menu, Triangle of Sadness, Waiter in Paris, Your Table Is Ready, The Bear, Waiting..., Hundred-Foot Journey, Kung Fu Panda, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, You Don't Have to Move Out of Your Neighborhood, Sweetbitter, Nutcracker Rouge, Tampopo, The Bob's Burgers Movie, This Alaska, The Garnish, Opening Soon, Down and Out in Paris and London, The French Dispatch, Boiling Point, Discard 'Zine, Crying in H Mart, Guest Check Magazine, Restaurant Unstoppable, and Fawlty Towers.
We are now accepting submissions for 86.11's Around the Table column. Send us your short, scrappy, punchy, funny, critical, applauding reviews on ANY type of media related to hospitality. We typically focus on books, movies, and podcasts, but the sky's the limit.
The guidelines are:
Keep it short & sweet: Roughly between 150-350 words.
Make it descriptive but not too expository: You don't need to describe the entire plot, but give us a gist of what you're talking about. It's good to include thedirector/release year/relevant actors when referring to a film, or the author/when it was published for a book, etc.
At the end, include where our readers can access this: X is available to stream on Y. X is in theatres until Y. You can listen to episodes of X on Y.
Must have some relevance to hospitality. You can get creative with your spin, but make sure whatever you're reviewing has some relevance to the industry--whether it's the memoir of a waiter, a performance that features a restaurant and its kitchen staff, or a podcast giving advice to restaurant owners.
Current media is preferred, but not required. While we would love to hear your thoughts on new releases, you are welcome to draw from older media (we sometimes call this "from the vault").
We will make selections for Around the Table within the next few weeks and print them, along with contributor names, in the magazine's tenth issue (set to release in late June). Please feel free to reach out with any questions: kate@86logic.com.
See the next page of this form for past ATT examples.
Currently we are accepting any and all forms of work including but not limited to comics, jokes, stories, poems, plays, photography, drawings, non-fiction, and editorials for our print magazine that explores, promotes, and celebrates artists with roots in the hospitality industry.
You must have worked in the hospitality industry — restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. — at some point in your life.
Submission Guidelines are simple. There are none. Show us what you have, however you have it. If we like it, we'll work with you to get it suitable for publication. We very likely won't publish your 85 page novella, but we might use some of it.
Each selected submitter will receive a copy* of the issue featuring their work. Unfortunately, we are unable to monetarily compensate artists at this time.
We are a small organization with rolling submissions. The average wait time for review is 5 months. We appreciate your patience; you will hear back from us.
*International contributors will receive digital versions
